HOW PODCASTS ARE WINNING BACK AUDIENCES IN A SCREEN-SATURATED ERA

BUENOS AIRES — From political commentary and personal finance advice to cinematic analysis and culture chats, on-demand audio is capturing an increasingly dominant share of daily media consumption. In a digital landscape long dominated by screen time and visual content, podcasts have carved out a pivotal niche, transforming passive listeners into dedicated audiences and opening lucrative commercial avenues for traditional broadcasters and independent creators alike.
Unlike traditional AM and FM radio broadcasts, which rely on linear programming schedules, podcasts offer permanent availability. Listeners can stream or download episodes at their convenience, pausing, rewinding, or fast-forwarding through content. This flexibility has prompted major radio stations to edit and repackage popular segments into downloadable audio files, seamlessly bridging the gap between legacy media and digital-first platforms.
The portability of audio content remains one of its most compelling advantages. Because podcasts require only auditory engagement, they do not compete for visual attention, allowing users to multi-task during routine activities. Industry surveys indicate that a majority of listeners tune in while commuting, driving, exercising, performing household chores, or navigating daily errands.
While the podcasting format began gaining steady traction over a decade ago, the global COVID-19 pandemic served as a major catalyst for adoption. Isolation and remote work environments encouraged professionals, educators, and commentators to launch specialized audio programs. What began as informal recordings has rapidly evolved into a highly professionalized industry featuring sophisticated sound production, narrative scripting, and strategic distribution.
Podcasts do not demand visual attention, which eliminates the need for video production, noted Damián Marsero, a marketing and advertising strategist. That lowers the barrier to entry, creates less personal exposure, and provides greater comfort for creators while delivering high value to the listener.
Data from Edison Research highlights the scale of this shift. According to the firm's Infinite Dial study, 78 percent of the U.S. population over the age of 12—an estimated 222 million people—is familiar with podcasts, up from 45 percent a decade earlier. More than half of Americans have listened to a podcast, with monthly listenership reaching 41 percent overall and 56 percent among adults aged 13 to 34.
Research by Westwood One further reveals that podcast enthusiasts spend 41 percent more time listening to audio overall compared to average consumers. These listeners tend to be younger, with a median age of 34 compared to 47 for traditional online radio audiences, and frequently consume episodes within their homes.
In regional markets across Latin America, media analysts observe a parallel transition. Reports from media agency Havas indicate a steady migration of listeners from traditional FM broadcasts to digital platforms like Spotify. Popular categories include entertainment, society, culture, and political economy, with average listeners following up to three specific shows and consuming two to five episodes weekly.
The format has also gained significant ground within education. Primary schools, high schools, and universities are increasingly incorporating podcasts into academic curricula.

Educators utilize audio production to foster teamwork, scriptwriting, and vocal presentation skills, while academic institutions leverage dedicated podcasts to disseminate research and instructional materials efficiently.
Monetization options have expanded alongside audience growth. Creators can monetize programs through dynamically inserted advertising clips, direct corporate sponsorships, or platform revenue-sharing arrangements. Marketing experts emphasize that integrating audio distribution with social media promotion and search engine optimization remains critical for audience expansion.

As production quality advances and episode formats streamline, industry analysts project continued growth for on-demand audio. By catering to shifting consumer habits with concise, high-quality programming accessible anywhere, podcasting has effectively granted spoken media a powerful second life in an increasingly visual world.
